The Polar Express

Last year we received a copy of The Polar Express, and Anthony fell in love with the book.

The book reappeared on our holiday bookshelf this Christmas season, and Grandpa bought James and Anthony the movie version as well.  Without fail, we read the "recent classic" every night, and watch parts of the movie almost as regularly.

When the opportunity came up to purchase tickets to ride The Polar Express on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, we couldn't say no.  It was easily the best "splurge" of our holiday season!

From the moment we arrived at the train depot, we felt as if we were part of the book.  The boys each received a golden ticket, just like in the movie. A conductor welcomed us onto our train car, and colorful elves helped us settle into our seats.

Once the train was moving, the conductor hollered, "tickets please" and punched each ticket with the boys' first initials.  A short while later, the "Chocolate Lady" led the kids in the chocolate song, and passed out hot cocoa and fresh cookies to everyone aboard.

There had been an unexpected snowfall the day before, which made the view from the train even more magical.  As we rode through the Cuyahoga Valley, we were able to spot plenty of deer, and even a coyote.

Nearly an hour into our ride, the train slowed at it was clear we were approaching the North Pole.  The adults moved away from the windows, and the kids excitedly waved at countless elves, snowmen, and dancing toys that lined the street.

The train stopped just long enough for a special person to climb aboard...

Santa stopped and visited with each family, and he listened very carefully to each Christmas wish.  Anthony reminded Santa that he really really really wants a Buzz Lightyear and a dump truck, and he also made sure that Santa knew his little brother wanted a Rockin' Elmo.

The train began its journey back to the depot, but not before each child received a special gift from Santa - a silver bell from his sleigh.  Anthony recited the lines from the book clearly, shouting that he recieved "the first gift of Christmas!"

The friendly elves led our train car in a number of Christmas carols.  Anthony had "low energy" so he curled up with his Daddy...

While Jimmy still had an excessive amount of energy, so he helped the elves with the Christmas sing-a-long.  (That is Jimmy in the very back of the train car, singing with Santa's helpers.)

If you can't tell from the smiles on all of our faces, our trip to the North Pole was fabulous.  Anthony clearly appreciated the way the train ride captured all of the elements of The Polar Express, and Jimmy loved the excitement and energy that filled the day.  And we loved sharing the experience with our boys.

Our ride on The Polar Express definitely qualifies as another BEST. DAY. EVER.
