New(er) Traditions

As our family grows and evolves, so do the traditions we celebrate during the holiday season.

This year we began The Elf on the Shelf, which we hope becomes a new family tradition.  Anthony and I have been reading the book, which tells the tale of an elf that watches over children during the day, and reports back to Santa Claus each evening.  Each morning, Anthony wakes up and searches for our little elf (which he named Turkey).

Another tradition we began last year is attending the Holiday Lighting in downtown Willoughby.  We meet up with Uncle Dave and some of his in-laws at a local restaurant, and then head outdoors to watch the lights go on.

Anthony and Jimmy really enjoyed the dinner.  My little Jim was all smiles!

And Anthony had lots of fun with Uncle Dave and his cousin.

We had such a great time at dinner with our family and friends that we actually missed the official lighting.  Anthony was disappointed that we didn't see Santa's arrival.

Fortunately, as we walked to our car, we saw a man who resembled Saint Nick, and Anthony easily believed that Santa was picking up his dinner from a local bar.  Phew...

One last event that we hope to make a tradition was a Christmas outing with Grandma.  This year, we visited the Cleveland Botanical Garden for their Winter Show.

In addition to checking out the greenhouse, we looked at the entries for the gingerbread house contest.

The houses were great to look at, but they weren't nearly as much fun as the train table in the children's area.  Jimmy supervised Anthony as he played with Thomas, Cranky, and friends.

After our visit to the gardens, we went back to Grandma and Grandpa's house for some dinner and playtime.

I hope that the traditions we are developing create warm, lasting memories for the boys.  I know that I will always hold these moments close to my heart.
